A word to employers about migraines

If you are an employer, please pass on this information to relevant employees, alternatively, for large employers I can run group sessions for affected staff that would be interested, please contact me for details or arrangements.

According to statistics produced by the UK government 1 in 7 people suffer from migraines. Migraine Action in the UK reflects that the impact migraines are often down played or misjudged by non-sufferers. But there is a large cost to those who get migraines as they often cannot do anything whilst having an episode and the durations can vary quite considerably from person to person, some lasting days.

This has the knock on effect to employers or other people reliant on someone prone to migraines.

The Migraine Trust has produced an excellent handout for migraine in the workplace offering practical information and advice to employers. It currently cites from recent CBI surveys that migraines are identified as the second most frequent reason of a short-term absence (for 47%) of non-manual employees. Attacks typically lasting between 4 to 72 hours. It also cites that many migraine sufferers also continue to attend work during a migraine episode despite being unwell, through fear that they will be disciplined or appear unreliable to their employers.

A splitting or throbbing headache is not the only symptom that migraine sufferers have, they may also? have:

  • Sensitivity to light, sounds, and sometimes smells and touch.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Lightheadedness, sometimes followed by fainting.

This makes life difficult if an employee needs to spend time infront of computer screens or need to operate vehicles or machinery.
